A Houston man faces 20 years in prison after being charged with intoxication manslaughter and assault, accused of drunkenly causing a one-way crash early Sunday morning.

Gerardo Gonzalez Luna, 51, remains the hospital after a crash on the west Sam Houston about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Luna had a blood alcohol level of .284, more than three times the legal limit, said Sean Teare, the vehicular crimes chief of the Harris County District Attorney’s office.

The wreck killed Adrian Byrd and put his wife, Veronnia Byrd, in a coma, Teare said.

Teare said Luna, who was convicted of DWI in 2009, was in a Ford F-150 with several open containers of Bud Light as he drove north on the southbound lane without his headlights.
Precinct 5 Constable’s Assistant Chief Terry Albritton said the F-150 hit the Byrds who were driving in a Mercedes sedan.
