Search crews are on the hunt for a 3-year-old boy who wandered from a campsite at the Sam Houston National Forest in Walker County.

A spokesperson for the Walker County Sheriff’s Office said the boy was reported missing in the later afternoon and that multiple search crews were on the scene, including search dogs.

In a video posted to Facebook, New Waverly Fire Department spokesman Jimmy Williams told the Montgomery County Police Reporter that other agencies in the search include the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, local fire departments, a team of Texas Game Wardens and some personnel and vehicles from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“A very serious situation. We’re looking for a small child lost in a very large area,” he said.

He said teams would continue searching through the night. Authorities are asking volunteers not to join the search.

The Sam Houston National Forest spans more than 250 square miles.
