For some NFL teams, summer is beginning a little early.
The Texans and Rams both announced Wednesday night that they would be forgoing the final day of minicamp in order to give their players a jump start on the real offseason — a month-long dead period just before the start of training camp in late July.
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Bill O’Brien and Sean McVay will not be the only two coaches making that decision. Around The NFL will update this page throughout the day Thursday if and when more teams decide to cut out of practice.
For the Texans, this is nothing new. O’Brien has regularly rewarded his team with an extended vacation, though sometimes he makes an offensive lineman work for it by catching a punt.
For McVay, the move is an interesting window into what his coaching philosophy might be. Thought to be an amalgam of the Gruden brothers, it might be time for him to carve out his own culture in Los Angeles.
