A Harris County jury Wednesday convicted Sandra Melgar of murder in the 2012 stabbing death of her husband Jaime Melgar.

As state District Judge Kelli Johnson read the verdict, outbursts of disapproval and shock rippled through the gallery of the courtroom, which has been packed with the widow’s supporters during the three-week trial. Several members of Melgar’s family, including the couple’s adult daughter, burst into tears.

Melgar, standing next to her defense lawyers, slumped forward clasped her hands in front of her face at hearing the decision.

She was found guilty of brutally stabbing her husband, 52-year-old Jaime Melgar, on the eve of their 32nd wedding anniversary on Dec. 23, 2012. She then staged a home invasion and tied herself up to be found in a closet of the master bedroom the next day.

The jury deliberated about eight hours before coming to a decision. Jurors are expected to immediately begin the punishment phase of the trial. Melgar faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
