An online rumor that a gun-wielding University of Texas student aided in stopping the deadly attack on Monday in Austin have been quashed by school officials.
The rumors stem from a tweet by @Texasrebel56, who screenshot a conversation where a student claims to have “grabbed my gun out and came back out and chased the kid briefly but wasn’t comfortable shooting because people were around.”
ATTACK AT UT: 1 dead, multiple injured in stabbing attack on UT-Austin campus
UT spokeswoman Cindy Posey told the Austin American-Statesman that the tweet was “a rumor and there’s nothing to verify it.”
The tweet gained traction online when it was picked up by Infowars, which wrote, “A student at the University of Texas at Austin reportedly used a concealed handgun to stop a knife attacker who had stabbed three people on campus Monday.”
The American-Statesman reports that at least one student repeated the rumor but later retracted it after learning it wasn’t true.
