RIP MTEMBEI
Mtembei, an 8-year-old giraffe, was euthanized in February after a significant fall. The 1.5-ton Masai giraffe could not get to his feet despite the effort of zookeepers and a veterinary team. Those staff members gave the giraffe pain medication, fluids and supportive care. They had to make the sad decision to euthanize the giraffe when it was clear after several hours that he could not stand on his own. less

Towards the middle of November the zoo gained a male Bornean orangutan named Pumpkin, who was relocated from the small Jackson Zoo in Jackson, Mississippi. Pumpkin joined five other orangutans at the Houston Zoo: Cheyenne, Aurora, Kelly, Indah, and Rudi. It’s hoped that he will mate with Kelly and continue to increase the numbers of the critically-endangered species.

TINY VIPERS
In late March, three tiny green bush vipers were born at the zoo. They are expected to grow to be between 18-24 inches long, the zoo says. The snakes are typically found in the tropical rainforests of western and central Africa and get their name from their preference for lower bushes rather than the tall canopy trees like some other snakes.

OL’ BLUE HAIR
In February the zoo welcomed a new hatchling, the Victoria crowned pigeon. With a set of bright blue feathers and a great mohawk/pompadour hairdo the bird is one of the most vivid in the zoo. Victoria crowned pigeons, natives to New Guinea, stay close to the ground and for that reason they are extinction-vulnerable. less

The Houston Zoo is now home to six Masai giraffes.
Stay tuned for a name for the giraffe, as that announcement usually comes within a few weeks of the animal’s debut.
