A mother accused of stabbing her 4-year-old daughter Sunday evening in northwest Harris County told the child’s father and aunt that she killed the girl, prosecutors said Monday.

Laquita Lewis, 34, was charged with capital murder in the death of Fredricka Allen.

“The defendant told the father that their daughter was no longer alive and was in Heaven,” prosecutors said during Lewis’s arraignment. “She told the father she stabbed the (victim) in the chest with a knife.”

Lewis was not present at the arraignment because she was still being processed into the Harris County jail.

She is expected to appear before state District Judge Maria Jackson Tuesday, where she will be formally arraigned and an attorney will likely be appointed.

Prosecutors said the police were called to Lewis’ apartment in the 5600 block of Timber Creek Place about 8:40 p.m. where they found the child bleeding heavily on the floor of the master bedroom.

The family called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office after Lewis apparently told the father what happened.

“She started text messaging him and then talked to him on the phone and told the father that the 4-year-old was dead,” prosecutor Lori DeAngelo said in court.

Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland said officers went to the mother’s apartment and found the child.

“It’s a horrible situation,” Gilliland said, from the complex.

Gilliland confirmed she contacted family members earlier that evening and told them she had hurt her child, said. The family members contacted the sheriff’s office.

The texts and calls happened after Lewis was involved in a crash Sunday.

Lewis was in the hospital with minor injuries as deputies found her daughter’s body. She left the apartment earlier that evening – after her daughter was stabbed – and at about 6 p.m. got into a traffic accident at I-10 and Loop 610. The Houston Police Department responded to that crash.
Lewis has a history of threatening violence, court records show.

Lewis pleaded guilty in February to threatening to murder her ex-husband, Donnell Lewis Jr., which is a misdemeanor. Lewis was on probation at the time of the stabbing.

Lewis filed for divorce from Donnell Lewis Jr. in 2012. The couple had children.

Lewis has also filed three paternity suits, all of which were dismissed. The first, in 2011, was against Donnell Lewis Jr.

The second two, in 2014 and 2015, were against a man named Fredrick Allen.

Deputies had not determined early Monday why Lewis would kill her daughter, though they believe.

Lewis got into a fight with her boyfriend earlier on Sunday, Gilliland said.

Chaplains with the sheriff’s office were at the apartment late Sunday to help deputies and family members.
