The Montrose veterinarian accused in a murder-for-hire plot against her ex-husband left an audio recording before committing suicide, KPRC reported. According to the station, Valerie McDaniel handed the roughly two-hour iPad message and a handwritten letter to her neighbor, who happens to be KPRC’s general manager.
In those items, McDaniel said that she “didn’t want to hurt” her ex-husband.
THINGS TO KNOW: Valerie Busick McDaniel, the late-Houston vet charged with murder for hire
“I’m sitting outside. I wanted to take time and tell my story. … I can get it on the record. I hate the idea that everybody thinks I’m a monster,” she said in the audio left for KPRC. “I didn’t want to hurt (him). I never did. It’s (my daughter’s) dad. She loved him so much and I wouldn’t. I’m so sorry about everything.”
THE BACKSTORY: Houston couple hired hitman to kill their exes but got undercover cop instead, prosecutor says
Eventually, her relationship with her ex-husband became heated and problems arose, she told the station. When she shared that with Jacob and an acquaintance of his, he offered to help. However, that person cooperated with Houston police, who’d been tipped off by Houston City Council member Michael Kubosh.
TIPPED: Houston councilman Kubosh alerted police to murder-for-hire plot
In the recording she described how she met her boyfriend, Leon Jacob, who is also accused of plotting to kill McDaniel’s husband and his own ex-girlfriend. She explained that she’d met Jacob because he’s the son of her mother’s neighbor. “It was the most passionate, romantic moment in my life. It was just the most amazing moment,” she said.
Jacob also allegedly planned to have his girlfriend kidnapped, intimidated and killed if she wasn’t cooperative. Multiple sources cite his ex’s assault charges against him as a motivating factor.
He was not allowed to attend McDaniel’s funeral.
See KPRC’s video above. It offers more details from the items they received.
