A pedestrian died after being struck by a Metro train in north Houston Saturday afternoon.

The train operator spotted middle-aged Latino man standing in the tracks on the Red Line shortly before 3 p.m. as the tram was approaching Neyland and Fulton, MetroRail spokeswoman Laura Whitley said. The area was not near a crosswalk, Whitley said.

The operator applied the brakes but was not able to stop the tram in time, she said.

The man died at the scene. None of the 20 or so passengers in the tram were hurt.

Metro’s safety department and police department are conducting separate investigations, she said. The victim’s name has not yet been released, she said.

“This is certainly an unfortunate event,” she said. “Metro continues to encourage everyone to be aware of surroundings, particularly when they are near our rail vehicles and the tracks.”
