A high-speed, but brief pursuit by Harris County Sheriff’s deputies left one man dead after he lost control of his vehicle while trying to evade police early Wednesday morning.

At about 12:10 a.m., deputies attempted to stop a man in a white Ford Explorer after he violated a traffic law in east Harris County near Channelview.

When the deputies flashed their lights, the man refused to stop and sped away.

Additional deputies joined the chase which officials said lasted about six to eight minutes.

During the chase along the East Sam Houston Parkway, the driver of the Ford Explorer lost control of his vehicle after hitting a curb.

Deputies said the vehicle slid sideways and then rolled multiple times, ejecting the man from the vehicle.

The driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

A Harris County traffic enforcement division deputy said he suspects alcohol played a factor in the crash, noting a strong smell of alcohol on the deceased upon arrival.
