A 23-year-old man died Sunday after drowning in the San Jacinto river at Banana Bend Beach, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The man and a friend waded into the water at about 6:10 p.m. after enjoying the day, Deputy Thomas Gilliland said.

The victim, who did not know how to swim, slipped underwater, and his friend couldn’t immediately find him, Gilliland said.

Others eventually found him, pulled him out of the water and started CPR, which spanned about 20 minutes. He was pronounced dead at San Jacinto Hospital, Gilliland said.

Drownings in the San Jacinto river are unfortunately common, he said, adding that the victim had been drinking and the hot weather also likely played a role.

“It’s the same type of deal we have every year at Banana Bend,” he said.

The victim was not immediately identified.
