Annie Banerjee thought she purchased a $300 vacuum cleaner from Target. But when she returned home after shopping Sunday the box instead contained dirty white towels, rocks and a can of bean-less chili.

Banerjee, a lawyer, returned to the Galleria location around an hour later to return the decoy box of goods, but she said the store refused to refund her purchase, and instead, called the police to escort her out.

Banerjee, who is from India, said the store manager told the police she was “Hispanic,” and said that she thinks she may have been racially profiled.

The store now plans to refund Banerjee and provide a free vacuum at the store’s expense, said Erika Winkels, a representative from Target’s public relations team.

But standing in the store’s parking lot Tuesday, Banerjee said a refund is not enough, instead she is looking for more substantive changes to store policy so it does not happen again to “somebody who looks like me.”
