Early commuters are stuck on the northbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway after a fatal crash Tuesday morning.

One left lane and a center lane of the elevated I-45 near Pierce are closed following the crash that happened about 5:52 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department.

The northbound and southbound ramps from the Gulf Freeway  onto the elevated I-45 northbound are also closed.

Local television stations report that a vehicle lost a tire, while traveling in the southbound lanes of I-45 near San Jacinto. The tire flew into the northbound lanes. It smashed through another vehicle’s windshield and killed the driver, according to television reports.

Traffic is being diverted to U.S. 59. Drivers should expect delays.
