Sunnyside’s struggle with unemployment shows Houston’s 5.5 unemployment rate isn’t universal.
While the city of Houston, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, enjoys a healthy labor market and several leading indicators suggesting accelerated employment growth within the city, many residents are still searching for work.
BIG CHANGES: Emancipation Avenue to anchor “economic corridor“
A Houston Chronicle analysis of the most recent U.S. Census data released in 2016 revealed Sunnyside had the highest unemployment rate in Houston with 29 percent. Unemployment surged in the community within the last 10 years after the Great Recession hit the nation.

Sunnyside never recovered from the economic blows and data show, many other communities are also struggling.
