On Saturday morning, dozens of people from Houston and neighboring communities answered the call and headed to the shelter to adopt the precious animals.

A Facebook Live video from KHOU-TV showed people forming a line outside the shelter before the doors opened at 11 a.m. Some of the people in the line shared that they were from Deer Park, Katy, Lake Jackson, Kingwood, Humble and other Houston suburbs.

When the doors finally did open, the lobby of the shelter was standing-room-only, according to a Facebook post shared by the animal shelter’s volunteers.

On Sunday, the response of locals continued with over 100 people and an estimated 80 adoptions, according to the shelter’s volunteer Facebook page.

While the news of the 59 puppies in one hour went viral, Public Information Officer Martha Marquez of the Harris County Animal Shelter says the numbers aren’t all that unusual.

“On a daily basis, we get anywhere from 60-80 animals in our shelter,” Marquez told Chron.com on Sunday. “That day we got 110.”

Some families left the shelter without dogs this time, representatives encourage anyone thinking about getting a dog to stop by the shelter often.

“If you don’t find what you’re looking for, please come see us again, because we always have loving animals,” Marquez told Chron.com.

For Houstonians looking to give puppies a permanent home, the Harris County Animal Shelter is located at 612 Canino and open 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
