A system error has resulted in some Houston toll tag drivers getting charged more than they should.

These errors were discussed on social media last week after one Reddit user received a letter from TxTag saying he owed them money. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) confirmed the error Monday afternoon.

“The customer service rep informed me that there was a ‘glitch in the system’ a few months ago where TxTag transactions would randomly fail to process against EzTag accounts,” Reddit user yanman wrote July 11. “TxTag cheerfully waived the fee and I was able to pay just the toll via credit card.”

That post was followed up with another Monday from a driver who thought something was odd when his May EZTag bill from the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) was lower than normal.

The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed Tuesday afternoon that some customers were issued a pay by mail invoice and violation in error.

EZTag, TxTag and TollTag (Houston, Austin and Dallas toll authorities) have been working to allow their toll tags to work with Kansas and other states so that Texas toll tag users can drive on other states’ toll roads using their same tags. During this time, the transfer of account information between the partnering toll authorities was delayed, thus causing the errors, the TxDOT said.

The TxDOT and HCTRA would not comment on how many customers have been affected.

The HCTRA is facing a lawsuit over what some drivers believe are exorbitant late fees, KPRC 2 reported.

The TxDOT has asked tag holders to call TxTag, TollTag or EZTag to dispute pay by mail invoices or violations they might have received in error from other toll agencies.

“Your home tag agency will file a dispute on your behalf to resolve these bill issues with the other agencies,” TxDOT added.
