Jan Coggeshall, who became Galveston’s first female mayor in the 1980s, died June 18, according to a press release from the city. She was 81. Coggeshall was elected to Galveston City Council in April 1979, served as mayor pro tem from 1983 to 1984 and was elected mayor in 1984. She resigned from the mayoral post in December 1989 to run for a county commissioner position.
