Free tetanus shots are available at a few locations in the greater Houston area in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Three FastMed Urgent Care sites are holding free tetanus vaccination clinics from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Shots are available at the following clinics:

  • FastMed: Tomball
    14080 FM 2920 Rd., Suite A
    Tomball, TX 77377
    832-843-7135
  • FastMed: Humble
    3832 Atascocita Rd., Suite C
    Humble, TX 77396
    281-812-0578
  • FastMed: Highway 6
    4805 Highway 6 N, Suite 12A
    Houston, TX 77084
    281-858-2931

To the east, the Galveston County Health District is making free shots available as well.

Tetanus is a bacterial infection, but booster shots are only due every 10 years. Anyone who was wading in the floodwaters with open wounds is at an elevated risk for infection.

Floodwaters can also carry other bacteria, including E. coli and flesh-eating vibrio vulnificus. But – despite rumors to the contrary – you cannot catch the plague from wading in Harvey’s mess.
