Former President George H.W. Bush has “good night’s rest,” won’t be discharged today

Former President George H.W. Bush had “a good night’s rest” and “continues to gain strength” following his recovery from a mild case of pneumonia, a family spokesman said Wednesday.

Bush, 92, remains under observation, spokesman Jim McGrath said in a daily update. He is looking forward to going home, but won’t be discharged Wednesday.

McGrath reported Tuesday that Bush’s case has been “treated and resolved.”

Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Friday due to a persistent cough. It was subsequently diagnosed as mild pneumonia.

At 90 years old, Bush is not the president who lived the longest just yet. He has three and half years until he beats the current reigning champ, Gerald Ford, who lived to be 93 years and 165 days old. He died in 2006, the day after Christmas.

Bush began his career in public service as an 18-year-old Navy pilot flying a torpedo bomber off the USS San Jacinto in the South Pacific during World War II. Six years ago the USS George H.W. Bush, the 10th and last of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers and the only carrier to be named for a carrier pilot was commissioned. Bush was there with a brood of Bushes to commemorate the event. less

Bush was hospitalized in January with pneumonia as well. On that occasion, he spent two weeks at Methodist, including time on a ventilator and breathing tube in the intensive care unit.
