Former Houston Rockets basketball star Steve Francis – known as “Steve Franchise” – pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge.

Francis, 40, admitted guilt in exchange for time served and a $1,000 fine before County Court at Law Judge Paula Goodhart.

Prosecutors, and the judge, took into account that Francis voluntarily went into a treatment program after his November arrest.

On Tuesday, the judge questioned him about his continued treatment for alcohol abuse and Francis told the judge he was embarrassed to face his children and other kids who look up to a former NBA player.

“It was a mistake that happened and I’m glad to get it behind me,” Francis said outside the courtroom with his attorney, Rusty Hardin.

Francis played for the Rockets from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2007 to 2008. He was the second overall draft choice in 1999 and was later named NBA co-Rookie of the Year.

Francis was arrested for drunk driving in 2001 while he was out with an injury. He was acquitted on that charge.
