Early commuters were stuck on the northbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway after a fatal crash Tuesday morning.

One left lane and a center lane of the elevated Interstate 45 near Pierce are closed following the crash that happened about 5:52 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department.

The northbound and southbound ramps from the Southwest Freeway onto the elevated Interstate 45 northbound were also closed.

By 9 a.m., all freeways and ramps at IH-45 and the Southwest Freeway were reopened.

Preliminary reports indicate a red Ford F-150 lost a front left wheel, while traveling in the southbound lanes of I-45 near San Jacinto. The tire flew into the northbound lanes, said HPD spokesman Victor Senties. The tire hit a red Ford Explorer, killing the driver, Senties said.
