An Arlington man is dead, and the mother of his children is in the hospital after a lengthy police chase in the Dallas area, the Dallas Morning News reports.

The trouble started about 2:30 a.m. Thursday when the victim sent a text message to 911 operators, saying she and her 2 children were kidnapped and that she had been shot. Shortly after, she jumped out of the moving vehicle as it was traveling on I-30 in Royse City.

Police pursued the man through Rockwall, Dallas and Tarrant counties. About 4:40 a.m., the RV broke down and began smoking.

The doors of the RV opened and two children, a toddler and 3-year-old, escaped. As officers secured the kids, they heard a single gunshot inside the RV which had already started to burn.

Officials pronounced the driver dead at the scene. They took the kids and mother to a nearby hospital. The mother’s condition is not known.
