Severe storms hit Fort Bend and Austin counties overnight, resulting in closed highways and cancelled classes Wednesday.

Though Houston proper missed the worst of the storms, a cold front traveling southeast from the northwest coupled with an upper level disturbance wreaked havoc in cities south and west of the city, including Sealy, said Molly Merrifield, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

All Sealy ISD schools and officers were closed Wednesday because of damage from the severe weather, according to the district’s web site.

Both I-10 and Highway 36 were shut down overnight near Sealy from downed power lines, said TxDOT spokeswoman Cari Hensley.

Highway 36 was still closed Wednesday morning between FM 3013 and I-10, Hensley said. Winds – which likely exceeded 60 miles per hour – caused an 18-wheeler to overturn on highway, Merrifield said.

I-10 was reopened around 4 a.m.

About 2,700 households were without power 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to CenterPoint Energy.

Winds shattered car windows in a Sealy ISD parking lot.

No tornadoes had been confirmed Wednesday morning, though there were reports of one near Simonton, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

Winds reached 61 miles per hour in Rosenberg, the fastest gust measured so far, Merrifield said.

Brazos ISD, which straddles Austin and Fort Bend counties, delayed the start of classes Wednesday until 10 a.m., two hours later than usual, according to the district’s website.

Several storms traveled across Trinity, San Jacinto and Polk counties, though those areas were not as affected as Fort Bend or Austin counties. There were reports of quarter-sized hail in Houston County, Merrifield said.

The wreckage followed severe weather warnings for east Texas Tuesday evening from the National Weather Service. Storms also pummeled the Houston area Monday.
