Burglars broke into a west Houston pharmacy but only nabbed a handful of medications, including codeine cough syrup, early Thursday, police said.

The burglars descended around 3:40 a.m. into the pharmacy in the 9500 block of Richmond near South Gessner, through the ceiling, said Capt. Megan Howard with the Houston Police Department.

Police made it to the pharmacy minutes later, but the burglars were able to evade arrest. Apparently, they exited back through the ceiling and ran into the nearby neighborhood just before police arrived.

The pharmacy on Richmond does not sell the narcotics that burglars typically target, Howard said.

The burglars only took a few less potent medications, including codeine cough syrup.

Police recovered all of the medications the burglars took.
