HOUSTON — With the No. 53 overall pick in the MLB Draft, the Astros took high school third baseman/pitcher Joe Perez of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a player who’s set to undergo Tommy John surgery this week.

The Astros announced Perez as a third baseman, which means they’re likely drafting him for his bat and not his arm. He has committed to the University of Miami.

The Draft continues on Tuesday with Rounds 3-10. The MLB.com preview show begins at 12:30 p.m. ET, with exclusive coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Astros’ 15th overall pick: J.B. Bukauskas

Perez, the No. 92 prospect on MLBPipeline.com’s Top 200 Draft Prospects list, will have Tommy John surgery Tuesday performed by Dr. James Andrews in Florida.

The Archbishop McCarthy High School product had one of the best fastballs in the Draft, which was clocked into the upper 90s. He was shut down this spring with a tired arm and some soreness, but returned to show the same explosive stuff, including his slider, which can be plus at times.

Perez pulled double duty in high school, and the overuse of his arm did concern some scouts. So did his profile, with his inconsistent delivery and effort leading some to see a future reliever in him, according to MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.
