Astros draft A&M pitcher Martin in Round 2

HOUSTON — The Astros stayed local with their third pick — and 56th overall — of Monday’s MLB Draft by taking Texas A&M right-hander Corbin Martin, who helped the Aggies reach the College World Series this year.

Martin, who’s from Cy Ranch High School just northwest of Houston, went 7-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 23 games (12 starts) for the Aggies. In 86 innings, he’s allowed 84 hits and 37 walks and struck out 94 batters with a fastball that can touch 98 mph, though it sits at 91-95 as a starter. He also has a sharp curveball.

The Astros took college right-handed pitchers with two of their first three picks, taking North Carolina right-hander J.B. Bukauskas with the No. 15 overall pick.

The Draft continues Tuesday with Rounds 3-10. The MLB.com preview show begins at 11:30 a.m. CT, with exclusive coverage beginning at noon CT.
