Investigators have an arson suspect in custody after a man died in a house fire late Saturday in northeast Houston.

Firefighters responded to reports of a one-story wood house in flames at the corner of Leedale and Vailview, near Little York, about 11 p.m.

“There is a person of interest in custody,” Ruy Lozano, a spokesman for HFD, said after talking to arson investigators. “Anytime you have a fire victim transported, this could turn into a homicide case.”

Firefighters rushed into the home where they found an unresponsive man. Emergency responders performed CPR and transported him to Memorial Hermann in critical condition where he later died.

A woman at the scene said she owned the home, but lived elsewhere. She said she did not know who the man may have been.

Lozano said firefighters did two sweeps before finding the man and had to cut a hole in the roof to help control the fire.

“This was a very dangerous and chaotic scene,” Lozano said. “Unfortunately, the neighborhood was very frantic during this period and were obstructing some of the jobs of the firefighters.”
